A creative community in the historic Gramercy District, Freehand New York is housed in the former George Washington Hotel – once home to many storied writers, musicians and creatives. Designed by Roman and Williams and featuring custom-commissioned artwork by Bard College students and alumni throughout, the property focuses on offering guests a one-of-a-kind experience within the city, while also revitalizing the local artistic community. Freehand New York is home to 398 guest rooms and suites. The hotel has three bars, including Freehand’s signature bar concept Broken Shaker, three restaurants, and 3500 square feet of co-working space.

Comodo, the restaurant from husband-wife team Felipe Donnelly and Tamy Rofe, offers Award-winning Latin American food from Chef Donnelly with influences from Mexico to Brazil and beyond. Georgia Room’s sophisticated atmosphere pays homage to its muse, painter Georgia O’Keeffe and her oeuvre, which are both heralds of a post-modern concept of elegance and femininity. On the other hand, Georgia Room also thrives on the eclectic energy from the surrounding architecture and the vibrant New York neighborhood Freehand is home to.
So when in doubt, dance it out at Georgia Room, the newest sweeping ballroom with southwestern décor and a large avant-garde disco ball hanging from the center of the room which will inspire your nights.
Bar Callico
The overall space, which includes the upstairs Georgia Room, creates an inclusive east-side lounge inspired by both New Mexico and New York landscapes simultaneously, revitalizing the building’s original 1930s architecture with a warm and intimate interpretation.
The contemporary twist combined with the inspiration for the iconic painter Georgia O’Keeffe, grants Bar Calico the same egalitarian ethos of the other Freehand NY venues while also preserving its unique southwestern flair.
Smile To-Go
Smile To Go is Matt Kliegman and Carlos Quirarte’s offshoot of their popular downtown café, The Smile. Chef/partner Melia Marden serves healthy and tasty Mediterranean-inspired fare focusing on daily rotating seasonal ingredients inspired by her youth spent between Greece and Greenwich Village. The dishes, pastries, and coffee options are perfect for a bite at a table or on-the-go.
